Demonstration Schools provide daily reading intervention using the Sick Kids Empower™ Reading program. This program teaches word reading skills and language comprehension as well as metacognitive strategies that help students organize their thinking for comprehension. Implementation of a consistent morning routine provides our students with practice in the skills, with immediate corrective feedback, in key areas of need as identified by progress monitoring evidence-based tools. Content-specific application of Empower strategies occurs within all other subjects to explicitly teach transfer. Use of evidence-based writing intervention programs teach organization, structure and application of Empower reading strategies to writing, syntax, grammar and Greek and Latin roots. Blended learning reading programs are used daily to scaffold reading instruction, provide intentional practice and monitor growth.
